Friday 4pm count down to the weekend

I am excited about the weekend! I have plans and ideas and so much stuff to do I am not sure how I will cram it all into one tiny weekend. My favorite idea comes from this news article I stumbled onto when I was supposed to be studying.
Even the time-honoured Australian kitchen favourite the Anzac biscuit was beaten by Red Velvet cupcakes, cake pops, macaroons and Massaman curry for the most popular food or drink.
So the thing that got me was "cake pop" ... what is a cake pop? Further research turned up this website by Bakerella (who looks exactly like her blog name... sorry it's hard to describe). Quite possibly the most amazing thing I have ever seen and I think I can make them. The gorgeous-cute-sickly-sweetness of the whole thing is just too adorable! Problem is, with a hobby like this, all of the running I have been doing will be for naught so... guess what everyone is getting for Christmas!

Tomorrow night I have been invited to a 21st Birthday party ... 80s Glam Rock night. I never thought I would say this but I simply do not have enough fluro in my wadrobe to deal with this. I know she isn't really Glam Rock but Cindy Lauper is an 80s fashion icon so I am going to hit the fluro pink hair dye and fluro plastic jewelery. My mission for tonight is to make a tutu to go with my 3 quarter pants and spandex tank top... yep you heard me. The things I do for my friends - seriously. I will post photos of the evening and to be honest I am so freaking excited! I do like dressing up!

So thats my weekend plans in a nutshell. Hope you all have a similarly cracking line up and have a brilliant break from work.

Diary Entry on a Bad Day

Is positivity a virtue? I hear that patience is but I don't have a lot of that either today. One of my friends says I am an eternal optimist (and that is why I make him want to punch me). Sometimes I don't think that is true... especially when I am having a bad day. Yes that is right everyone a bad day. And it isn't the end of the world... sorry for crying down the phone like an idiot but I have pulled myself together and it is all going to be fine.

In interviews, the question that throws me the worst is "Give an example of one of your negative personality traits"... I have only got that question twice and both times I didn't get the job. Probably because I am too honest. What is it? Besides all the truly nasty things that I refuse to admit to myself... my worst personality trait is bursting into tears when I am frustrated rather than reacting like a normal human being. How do normal people deal with frustration? Anger? Actually, anger can set off the waterworks also. With stress I am fine taking charge of the situation - stress I can handle. It's frustration that makes it all unravel. I think most employers hear that and think they are going to have to deal with someone who is overly emotional but that isn't true either. The fact is that I exhaust all avenues to solve the focus of my frustration and where there is no answer, I will happily smash my head against the immovable brick wall at least 50 times before I crack it. And even then, cracking it consists of quietly excusing myself and then bawling in the bathroom for a couple of seconds. Sounds healthy? I need to find a new worst personality trait... what about "too ambitious" which can be read as "back stabbing b!tch" or "too career focused" translation "will want a raise in 6 months" ... actually I would be happy to be hired on that basis.

I have decided that positivity is a virtue... No point dragging everyone down with me. So here are the things I am grateful for:

Only 2 subjects left before I finish my degree. Pressure is on! February 28th (ish) is the final exam. I am so excited I could use a dirty expletive! Need to decide what to do next... stay where I am? Look at graduate work? Try to find another job? Ten years at uni is a decent time/money/emotional investment, I just hope I can turn it into gold... the world is my oyster and all of that. Check out this website if you wondered... like I just did, where the phrase "the world is your oyster' comes from.

Melbourne is putting on some amazing weather for the last couple of days which has been really nice. I am getting outside heaps (daylight savings does have its upsides). In fact the plan for tonight is to go for a run down by the beach in St Kilda.

I finished the 12wbt this week. I really enjoyed it. I didn't make my goal weight because I didn't stick to the program as closely as I should have but my eating habits and fitness are so much better than they were! I am running 5km 4 or 5 days a week and have a circuit style exercise video that I do on the other days. I am smaller than when I started. If you are thinking about joining a program like Jenny Craig or Weight Watchers... I would do the 12wbt first. And actually if you just want to get moving try out Couch to 5k running program. It is awesome... I can't rave enough. I did both together and seriously feel awesome.

And my last rave for the day... I am grateful to have a job even if I hate it, I know amazing people and have some amazing friends, my fridge is full of food because I live in a country where no one suffers from malnutrition unless they boycott vegetables by choice (which is stupidity not disadvantage) and there is a bottle of New Zealand sav waiting for me when I get home. Life is good but today sucked worse than Twilight.

Another day another diet

Hi All,

(Written in September... didn't push the publish button! Rookie mistake)

It has been a while since I updated last but I have excuses! Uni, work and new fitness regime. Not that I need that much of an excuse to take time off blogging but I do feel a little slack.

So what has been happening since I spoke to you last? I have finished a semester of uni with only two subjects left to complete before I get my degree ... thats 10 years at uni for those who are counting. So needless to say I am pretty jazzed about the prospect of not needing to do another assignment ... ever! Only downside is that due to scheduling conflicts the university have not offered either of the two remaining subjects this semester so I have to wait until the end of the year. No biggie because in my time off I am going to keep myself busy with a new fitness challenge and I signed up as a volunteer at the local theatre company. Yep thats right... I can't sit still for more than 2 maybe 4 seconds.

And I am on another diet. This one I am going to stick to *laughs* .... no really I am. It's a lot better organised than my other attempts and although I am in a whole world of pain from running my little heart out - I feel stronger and my fridge looks like it belongs to a fitness finatic! One thing that is going to cause me some major pain is that I am supposed to cut down on my coffee consumption - apparently if I drink a cup of coffee every day I need to have a good hard look at myself... who doesn't drink coffee every day? Seriously!?! Oh and 6 days of training a week - I am going to be an athlete after this! At least it is interesting and I didn't need to join a gym (my inner-tight-ass is therefore happy) ... although if I am very good and keep up the hard work for the full 12 weeks, I am going to treat myself to a gym membership.

My work hours changed too in the last couple of weeks from whenever I am awake to 9 to 5. Loving it! I really like shutting down my pc after work and not thinking about it until the next day at 9am. Just wondering how long this is going to last.

Written in November (i.e. today and this time I am gonna press the publish button!)

So far I actually have stuck to the diet! I am up to week 10 and although I haven't lost a tonne of weight, I did run 5km without stopping today which is massive for me. I have been steadily losing a bit every week and have mostly been sticking to the eating plan but I think the most important thing has been exercising every day (mostly... 5-6 times a week anyway). Thats been good for my mental health too I think! All of it is positive anyway.

In other news, I went to the Melbourne cup with my mum and dad this year where they met the new boyfriend (new isn't exactly right and it's "Facebook Offical" don't you know, so calling him the boyfriend is ok now... *laughs* such a Gen Y concept). Also, I have a big trip planned in December through January. Well big is maybe not the best description but it will do. Bundaberg, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Alstonville - family Christmas and all that. I am excited about it.

Ok ok it's all happening but I will leave it at that for now. Will try to update a bit more regularly for a bit.

Love to all!

Monday Again

No matter how much I wanted the weekend to stay, I woke up and it was Monday again. Lame. Today has been pretty successful though I have to say. Completed many tasks at work... unfortunately many more to go but I am working through the paper mountain. The exciting thing though for today is the fact that I am watching a movie on my PS3 and my working television.

So here is the story of my newish TV

My friend found a TV on the side of the road. It had been raining and whoever owned the TV before it ended up in my house had cut the power cord... presumably so that no one would take it? Well we showed them! The TV sat here in my lounge room for about a month because for some reason, the fact that I have it in my house means that I am now responsible for its disposal and I would feel guilty about leaving it on the side of the street. What kind of greenie would I be? (The answer to that question is "light green" very very light green) After staring at it for a while I decided it needed to start working again. I talked to my electrician friend who said that legally I am allowed to replace the plug, all I have to do is go to Bunnings and buy one for about $3, pull the plastic coating back and put the copper bits in the colour coded clamps and voila... new plug. And when I plugged my new plug into the power ... the TV worked! Whoop! So I bought a set top box and an RV Cable for my PS3 and it all works. The reception in my apartment is a bit rubbish but that is because whoever painted the walls didn't even try to avoid the TV Antenna socket. The TV is perfect (well its a bit of a downgrade from the 42 inch plasma but the sense of achievement makes up for that) and the first movie I am watching is Astro Boy!

Now it is time to get some work done before I curl up with Honey for a proper nights sleep.

Somebody flicked a switch because it went from normal shitty Melbourne weather to freezing cold and rainy shitty Melbourne weather in the space of a couple of days. Really glad that I live in Australia because this grey miserableness ends in a couple of weeks to a month tops. I feel for the people all the way up in the Northern Hemisphere who have this for 6 months of the year. Meanwhile... right now they are enjoying their Spring/Summer while I am freezing my ass off in what is supposed to be Autumn! I promise I will stop ranting after this one last comment: I HATE FOOTBALL and it is a religion here!

So onto brighter news... my office has heating!

I know I am supposed to be working/studying but I managed to find time to do a bit of research in the last couple of days.

#1 discovery - David Bowie has anisocoria... he had part of his right eye dislocated during a [play?] fight with a school friend called George Underwood which is why one pupil is bigger than the other. And yes... before you judge me... I did go to a website called "Bowie Wonder World". I tried to explain this to someone else and I made the same mistake... it is his left eye (obviously). In the photo it is on my right so his left. The left/right thing messes me up every time!

#2 discovery - Albert Fish = Crazy-sick-twisted man! And actually so is Gary Ridgeway for that matter.
#3 discovery - I should not research serial killers when I am by myself and without lights
#4 discovery - Refer #3 but for watching Paranormal Activity ... even though I watched it with Miss V... I still had to sleep with a night light on for a couple of nights

#5 discovery - It is not only possible but also common for men to have brown hair and a ginger beard. I was wondering because my dad has ginger in his beard (which explains my little brother) but apparently Ginger-beard-men aren't that rare. There is a Facebook page dedicated to it. There is a scientific explanation behind it but I won't bore you with it... something about having enough ginger indicators on so many chromosomes but not enough to be a full ginger.

And now I really should get some work done... Is it lunch time yet?
By the way: why does blogger bother with having a spell checker? Since when is miserableness a word?... Actually one sec (I love the internet) - Just checked the dictionary and it is a word! Spell checker is still broken.

Love you guys!

To set the scene:
It is 8.26am on a Monday morning, I have just arrived at work feeling like I have been robbed of at least 3 hours sleep that my body wishes I could have had and imagine my delight at finding this in my inbox from my parents. They have officially made my Monday!

I hope it cheers up anyone else suffering from Mondayitis... which I think should be a medically recognised illness.

Anything you can do...

I am watching a black and white movie called "The Wild Ride". I am going to go out on a limb here and say it's not Jack Nicholson's best work. Meanwhile it is interesting seeing how much he has changed.

I love Jack, The Shining, One Flew Over the Cookoo's nest... A-Maz-ing! but I wouldn't recommend this film, or About Schmidt (that's where the second image comes from). That is not actually why I am online tonight. I want to rave about my new couch! My apartment is looking like a real apartment!

The TV doesn't work (it was actually on the side of the road). I took the couch apart and put it back together again when I got it home all by myself. It fit in my tiny 3 door hatchback too! You can see the edge of my new curtains which I put up as well. So after all of that I am feeling quite modern! Proof that a single girl can get stuff done too.

Having said that, all the extra activity has made me quite sleepy so I might take myself to bed.

Good night!

Lists of lists

Feels like I am living by lists... I have one for almost everything. One for work (down to 50 actionable cases... from 185 a week before quarter end... Go me!), one for uni - actually two for uni, one for each subject. I have a "to-buy-for my new place" list, grocery list... the list of lists continues! I celebrate a little every time I get to cross something off. Love the feeling of one less thing I need to accomplish! I heard a saying "If you want to get something done, give it to a busy person" the meaning is that, busy people do things the second they get a free moment while people who are not busy will continue to put jobs off until they can be bothered... I am a busy person but I don't think anyone should give me anything more to do. This juggler is about 2 balls away from dropping the whole lot.

I am a happy little vegemite today! I did get a full 8 hours sleep last night which is one big reason but also because I have bought the couch that I wanted (thank you Grandpa!) and am just waiting for Saturday so that I can go to pick it up. Excited isn't even close to how I feel about it! I will put photos up of it when it is in my apartment. So that is one thing off my new apartment list. I am going to put up the last set of curtains tonight. I have been avoiding it because this particular window is a little tricky because it doesn't have enough room around the edges and I think that it is mostly painted concrete so, not so easy to drill a hole through without a buzz buzz drill and even then I am not sure that you can drill through concrete?

My friend from Brisbane came to Melbourne on Friday so I had an opportunity to show him around. We went to the city, he got to go on a tram which he thought was very exciting. Matt is the biggest child I have ever met, seriously - he measures about 6"8' and is built like a brick-shithouse (that has to be the most Australian term, so sorry to be crass but I love it!) but mentally, he is a 2 year old trapped in a mans body.  The bonus here is: Anything boring gets only a couple of seconds attention so we only did fun stuff. He likes to talk and drink coffee... a lot, so we drank a lot of coffee and had a proper catch up (it's been almost 4 years), we went to Luna Park and he didn't laugh at me when I wanted to see the snow (because he also wanted to see the snow) ... as it turns out, the snow was a sand-pit full of ice but different enough to be interesting anyway.  We spent far more money than we should have on a claw machine and low and behold... no toy. We had dinner at a place called Abbey Road which was really nice, with another friend. The theme of the resteraunt is a bit like the theme for Hard Rock Cafe and the food was massive. Don't remember prices but was very impressed.

Not much else going on, other than working and studying... in fact I am putting together a web page for one of my uni assignments. It's a lot of work for a first year subject but I am getting there slowly. Only 6 months left before I am done and I get the piece of paper saying "congratulations you now have a degree". I can't think of the words to describe how happy that will make me!

Loving this song at the moment:

Radio and peroxide

Friday night, I am at home with my cat in my new pad, just bleached the living daylights (or should I say nightlights?) out of my hair and am relaxing on a blow up matteress, in front of my work computer, listening to the radio. Life is grand! ... meanwhile, said cat has actually just put a hole in my matteress and I am mostly sitting on the carpet. I have been in my new apartment for almost a month I think and I don't have a couch yet (I don't have a TV so it hasn't seemed that terribly necessary). Now that I am sitting on the ground though, my number one priority is to buy a couch. In fact I have been looking for a while and found the perfect one at IKEA.

It is 142cm wide - which is lucky because the space I have to fit it in is only 160cm, and it folds out into a double bed. PERFECT! Except for one tiny little thing... it is over $500 and as such over my budget (trying to be good with money at the moment). So I turned to Ebay and found it listed for $100, now that is more like it! I put a bid on it 2 mins before end of bidding and was winning for a full 1 minuet and 55 seconds before some wanker outbid me by $2.50. I was getting cocky before the bidding closed, imagining my new couch in my apartment and me sitting on it reading a book and basically loving it only to be outbid by $2.50!!! I almost cried. So now I hope they have to re-list it, especially considering my backup has deflated. The matteress shredder is sitting on my lap now, all wide eyed innocence! Lucky I am in a fantastic mood otherwise I would be very cranky with her.

I am blonde again as of an hour ago. I really should keep on top of that a bit better, but I don't because there is always something more important to do. Now that quarter end is over (WOOOOP!) I will be able to chill a bit more and absolutely must get back to the gym! I haven't been in about 2 weeks and am starting to feel a little chunky. Will go tomorrow - speaking of which, I need to charge my mp3 player. Since my iPhone died I have separate devices for my electronic requirements: an mp3 player that is almost 5 years old (that is like 1000 years in electronics), a cr@py nokia (which only cost $50 - awesome) and my new tablet (which is probably my favorite thing in this world) for internet out and about. Actually, if anyone is going to die from cancer caused by radiowaves it will be me. I have 2 mobiles (one is for work), two laptops (again, one is for work), a wifi-hotspot, tablet... By rights, my edges should be cooked the same way food does when you put it in a microwave! My loungeroom is one big microwave! Interestingly I don't have one in my kitchen though (another thing on my to buy list).

Now I have some work and study to do before I call it a night.
Hope you are all having a brilliant Friday night like me!

Pain free my @ss!

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) hair removal is not in fact hair removal, it is hair reduction, although after one session it's hard to see how much. Also it is not pain free, not that they actually said that anywhere but I didn't expect it to hurt!. And now that I have killed your dreams of easy hair removal (as mine were destroyed on Tuesday) ...

I bought an Android Tablet yesterday. I have never wanted a thing as much as I wanted this thing and I have just proven to myself that money can buy happiness no matter what they say. I should be more specific and say temporary happiness because its only a matter of time before I drop it/smash it in my bag or brick it like my poor iPhone. Then I will be sad. In the meantime what a fun/constructive/brilliant gadget it is!

After much umming and aahhing I decided on the Motorola Xoom:

And Yes... I am having trouble hearing over the sound of how awesome it is.
Only problems so far:

Telstra made me wait a couple of hours for the sim card to be active (agony)
Micro SD slot is there but it doesn't work (need to wait for it to be activated via firmware upgrade sometime in the future)
I am having trouble working because I want to play with my new toy.

Other than that it's great! Can't wait till I get home so that I can connect to the wireless and download like a bazillion apps. Sorry Apple, we had fun but since you decided to pack it in and gave me no way of fixing you I am out of the iMarket, probably for good. Need to figure out how to download all of my saved iPhone stuff onto the tablet... hmmm. Sounds like I have a good couple of weeks of procrastination up my sleeve. Need to spend some decent time studying this weekend though - exam on Monday.

Anyway, time for me to get back to work,

Late assignment ... again

This was me when I woke up this morning.

This is me when I got to work this morning (except I think my boobs are bigger than hers... hair equally as dishevilled)

And that is how I got through today...

Why you might ask?

I Handed in an assignment at 5.30am this morning. Now in my defense, I have been working ridiculous hours and I just didn't have enough time to focus on my assignment (and I wasted my entire Saturday watching movies with Miss V ... a girl needs a break!). I am however incapable of finishing these things within a comfortable time before the due date. Normally I hand in a mediocre piece of work a couple of minuets before it is due ... this time I handed it in 5 and a half hours after it was due. I would have just thrown it together normally and hoped for the best (I am an average student who puts in minimal effort - C is still a degree - also I work full time so don't be too harsh on me) but this time I am really interested in the subject so I got a bit caught up in the research and design of it so next thing I know... its overdue. Meanwhile... I wrote a kick-ass assignment! Pretty pissed off with myself actually because I am going to lose about 10% of my mark because it was late. If I had just started sooner! But then I wouldn't be me, I would be some crazy alien version of me who is organised and no one wants to see that.

Speaking of organised --> I wrote a budget this month. It is becoming necessary seeing as my paychecks aren't so easy to predict (in terms of when they will be handed out I mean) and I keep getting caught on pay day with no money and no pay. Lame. Regardless, I think my budget is good, I have $56.89 spending money for the month. Yeah I know it sucks but I'm a struggling uni student remember? ... with a full time job. Food, bills and necessities are covered and I think, if I use my plastic card of doom I might be able to sign up for the adult education classes I want to do. I want to do a language course in Dutch and hopefully score a job in the Netherlands when I finish my degree. You can do that after 12 weeks of classes right? Living in Europe sounds sooooo exotic (and cold... there is such a thing as cold exotic, doesn't have to be palm trees and tropical sun you know). Anyway... if I stick to my budget this month, I will be in a brilliant position next month and can start saving for doing what I want. And that's the plan until I mess it up by going drinking with my flatmates or something equally as silly... eeep! wish me luck?

Awww! Life imitating Art... Do you think it was deliberate? I mean... why else with the stupid hat? Sorry... hats.

Don't remember if I have posted this before but it is right up there in my top 10 WTFs:

It is a real product and you can buy it online for $22 ... why you would buy it I cannot answer.

So you can buy it here and the sales pitch is almost as funny as the concept:
Introducing Potty Fisher. The toilet time fishing game that lets you enjoy some fishing whilst going to the bathroom.
Sure it sounds a little fishy (pardon the pun), but for the fisherman that just can't get enough of the sport it's the perfect gift!
With a water themed mat, an extendable fishing rod, a collapsible bowl for water and of course 4 fish - it's all an angler needs to keep entertained when on the job. There's even a "Do Not Disturb" sign included to ensure uninterrupted fishing!
Uninterrupted fishing... So that is what has been missing from my life (Ew)

Fiji Photos

So as promised, here are some of the photos I took in Fiji:

This was the first resort we stayed in on the Coral Coast - we were the only guests

Pounded grog is kava... like alcohol but not.

I have a fascination with these things!

The dogs and pigs were hanging out together and there were no fences. I think the plan is to eat the pigs though... I don't think Fijian's eat dogs.

The security guard at our resort, Ali, helped us out with our lack of cup situation by opening green coconuts for us to drink our 58.9% alcohol Bounty Rum... headaches all round the next day

Ali also got us about $100 worth of fireworks ... he said they were illegal... I have my doubts but we had so much fun fireing them into the ocean so really I think $100 well spent (Fijian dollars too and with the exchange rate it was only $60 Australian dollars)

Britt and I look like wizards in this photo! (I'm the short one in the distance)

We were told that the Island across the bay is $1500 a night to stay (compared with ours... $30 a night). It is so exclusive that even Mr. Paris Hilton stays there... I don't think that the boys we were talking to actually know who Paris Hilton is.

We were in Lodge 4. The only reason I didn't gain a million pounds while staying in this resort is because we had to walk up a million stairs to get to our room. Only fun the first time.

I know you can't tell from the photo (depth perception really isn't my cameras strong suit) but this palm tree was easily 20m high and this guy climbed all the way up there and got us some coconuts!

Every resort we stayed at had a dog... this ones name is "Dog" and she doesn't belong to anyone in particular but is very friendly. She went to sleep under the hammok.

So cute!

Fire dancing at Beachcomber!

I don't know why but every family holiday I have ever been on, there is one of these photos.

Flea bites from the fleas of a dirty-stinky-backpacker who had the bed before me!

The photos just don't do the trip justice but at least it gives you an idea of the place. Beautiful even when it is raining, the most amazing sunsets and sunrises, rediculously friendly locals and a million things to see and do.

Just Breathe ...

I know that I promised to put up some photos from Fiji... and I will... but I have not stopped running since I got back and so haven't had time. I have been putting the photos on Facebook in between doing other stuff and then I will put them up here although by now I guess no one is interested anymore *laughs* Still this one was taken by my friend when we went surfing on the reef break at Nomotu Left and gives you an idea of the scenery we had to suffer through.

Can you believe this sunset?

So since I have been back, I have completed 2 assignments, joined the gym (and am actually going to the gym more than 3 times a week - go me!) and went to a Royal Wedding party. I really do like fairy tales and the dress was beautiful. This weekend is super exciting because my Mum is coming to visit. I even cleaned my car for the occasion (I am picking her up from the airport and don't want the first thing she sees to be my manky car full of garbage and the like) and because it was so disgusting, I wrote a poem:

When I cleaned my car today, guess what I did find....
7 miscellaneous plates
6 lolly wrappers
5 drinking vessels
4 books and a thesaurus
3 unpaid overdue notices
2 pieces of clothing
and a tin of Milo that expired in '06

Even though it looks like I have too much time on my hands... I don't, this is just how I keep myself sane...

Oh oh oh! I almost forgot - I got to see my school friend this week. We caught up for dinner because she was in Melbourne. I haven't seen her in 5 years so dinner wasn't really enough but we talked for a couple of hours and had Sushi Train at this dodgy place on Swanston St in the city (more fun that just having sushi - because it is on a train!). She is a qualified draftsman (or draftswoman?) and beautician and now she is training Process Change Management ... crazy intelligent and probably the most beautiful person I know. Moving around has seriously made me lose touch with some incredible friends! Still it was super amazing seeing her again, AND she told me that her brother (1 year older than me) just had his 10 year high school reunion... do you know what that means? I have been out of school for 9 years and I haven't finished one degree (even though I have been studying for.... 9 years). So now I really need to finish uni this year otherwise I am going to be in that awkward group at my high school reunion that still doesn't know what they are going to do with themselves and it's not like I can blame it on having kids or a high flying husband (although I might make one up?).

Anyway I must fly because I have "much to do and less time to do it in" (Robin Hood: Men in Tights - if you haven't seen it... do!). Spell checker is broken again --- I did pass high school English it's just that I got lazy after and spell checker is soooooo convenient so ignore my bad spelling.

Whoarrrr ! Express posting at its most average :)

P.S. My phone is broken - and I am not that impressed actually
P.S.S. I am really going to go now and get some work done
